Claude Code + OMP / Set up

Set up once, then make a first file.

Install a terminal agent, open it in a practice folder, and give an ordinary file a useful revision. Every recipe on the recipe list runs the same way.

Jump to: Install · Practice files and first terminal · The ladder · Mac kits

Cost: The kits and practice files are free. Claude Pro includes Claude Code: $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month with annual billing ($200 up front) (as of 2026-10-08). API billing is pay-per-use. OMP cost depends on the model provider you connect.

Before you start: you need a computer, not a phone. A prompt can ask the agent to stay in one folder but cannot enforce it, so approve each file change and command yourself: Claude Code asks by default, and omp --approval-mode always-ask starts OMP the same way. Whatever the agent reads is sent to its model provider, so start with the fictional practice files.

Install at your computer

Choose your operating system. The install commands below are copied from the official Claude Code setup and official OMP quickstart. Inspect those docs before running a remote installer.

Mac

In Terminal, choose one:

Claude Code

curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash

OMP

curl -fsSL https://omp.sh/install | sh

Windows

In PowerShell, choose one:

Claude Code

irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex

OMP

irm https://omp.sh/install.ps1 | iex

Linux

In a terminal, choose one:

Claude Code

curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash

OMP

curl -fsSL https://omp.sh/install | sh

After installation, run claude --version or omp --version, then claude or omp. Follow the sign-in or provider/model prompts. Claude Code account eligibility and OMP model provider options and costs are in the official docs.

Choose your route, not an interchangeable installer

Claude Code + four ready-made kits

Use Claude Code for any recipe. Its four optional ZIP kits add Claude-specific commands and skills. Their installer is for Mac only. A free Claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code.

OMP + the plain-text path

The recipe prompts are plain text, so they work in OMP too; each recipe page says which tools it was run in. Set up a model provider first. The Claude Code ZIPs and their commands are not an OMP kit.

A first file: change a vague draft

Fictional example, not a guarantee. This is the saved result of the exact request below, not a simulated terminal.

1 / INPUT · draft-sample.txt

Our best-in-class membership delivers guaranteed savings and effortless grocery delivery.

The brief says: The current welcome is a receipt and a fridge magnet.

2 / EXACT REQUEST
Read brief-sample.txt and draft-sample.txt in this folder. Replace vague claims with a short welcome note for new members using only the brief. Save it as revised-draft.txt. Do not edit the inputs. After saving, say which draft claims lacked support.
3 / SAVED OUTPUT · revised-draft.txt
Welcome to Riverbend Co-op

Welcome, and thank you for joining Riverbend Co-op, your neighborhood grocery co-op. As a member, you're an owner here, not just a shopper.

To get started, join us for a Saturday morning orientation. Staff will show you around and walk you through how to suggest products you'd like to see on our shelves.

We're glad you're here.

Example outcome, recorded 2026-10-08 with Claude Code 2.1.292. Your result may differ.

Human check: The saved note says staff will show members around. Does the brief say that? Remove the extra claim before using the note.

OMP made a separate saved result from the same request:

SAVED OUTPUT · revised-draft.txt
Welcome to Riverbend Co-op. As a member, you're an owner here, not just a shopper.

Join us at a Saturday morning orientation to meet staff and see how the co-op works. While you're there, we'll show you how to suggest products you'd like us to carry.

We're glad you're here.

Example outcome, recorded 2026-10-08 with omp 18.8.3. Your result may differ. Human check: the brief does not say members meet staff or see how the co-op works at orientation.

Your first time in a terminal

Use a computer for this part. Choose Claude Code for the optional Mac kits or OMP for the plain-text practice path. Install only your chosen tool. Nothing is uploaded to this site.

Make a folder called cli-practice inside Downloads, then put both fictional files in it. Leave the originals unchanged. Then choose your computer below.

Mac: Terminal and Finder
  1. Install Claude Code (official setup) or OMP (official quickstart). Read the install instructions before running a command.
  2. Open Terminal using Command + Space, type Terminal, and press Return. Type cd with a space after cd. Drag your cli-practice folder from Finder into Terminal, then press Return. Apple's folder-drag guide.
  3. Type claude or omp and press Return. On its first run, Claude Code asks you to sign in in your browser; OMP asks you to set up a model provider.
  4. Copy the EXACT REQUEST above, paste it into your agent, and press Return. Read any requested file permissions before approving them.
  5. In Finder, open cli-practice and double-click revised-draft.txt to read it. Compare it with brief-sample.txt; do not trust the result without checking.
Windows: File Explorer and PowerShell
  1. Install Claude Code (official Windows setup) or OMP (official quickstart) using the PowerShell command, not a Mac .command file.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click cli-practice and choose Open in Terminal on Windows 11. It opens in that folder. If this option is missing, open PowerShell, type cd , paste the folder's full path in quotes, and press Enter. Microsoft's Terminal context-menu support.
  3. Type claude or omp and press Enter. On its first run, Claude Code asks you to sign in in your browser; OMP asks you to set up a model provider.
  4. Copy the EXACT REQUEST above, paste it into your agent, and press Enter. Review file-access prompts before approval.
  5. Open cli-practice in File Explorer and double-click revised-draft.txt. Read it and check every claim against brief-sample.txt.
Linux: Terminal and Files
  1. Install Claude Code (official Linux setup) or OMP (official quickstart). Use the terminal install command for your chosen tool.
  2. Open Terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T on most distributions). Type cd ~/Downloads/cli-practice and press Enter. If you saved the folder elsewhere, replace the path with its location. In KDE Dolphin, opening the folder and pressing Shift + F4 also opens a terminal there. KDE's folder-terminal guide.
  3. Type claude or omp and press Enter. On its first run, Claude Code asks you to sign in in your browser; OMP asks you to set up a model provider.
  4. Paste the EXACT REQUEST above and press Enter. Review access prompts before approving.
  5. Open cli-practice in Files and open revised-draft.txt in a text editor. Compare it with brief-sample.txt.

If a command is not found, use the linked official install troubleshooting. For a slower walkthrough, see the Claude Code terminal guide and OMP quickstart. The same two plain-text files work in either lane; the four Mac ZIP kits are Claude Code only.

One file can become a way of working

Do these in order. Keep the original files, inspect each saved result, and stop whenever you have what you need.

  1. 01 / First file

    Make a draft

Use the two practice files above. Open the saved output. Check each claim against the brief.

    Get the files
  2. 02 / Second revision

    Ask for your change

Name a sentence you would not say. Save another version without overwriting the first.

Read revised-draft.txt. Remove any claims the brief does not support. Save a shorter version as revised-draft-v2.txt. Keep the first file unchanged.
  3. 03 / Saved format

    Teach it once

In Claude Code, save only the steps you approved in a project skill. Read the file; test it on a different input before trusting it.

Turn my approved welcome-note format into .claude/skills/welcome-note/SKILL.md. Include instructions to check each claim against its brief. Show me the file before I keep it.
    Official Claude Code skill guide
  4. 04 / Separate review

    Have it checked

Start a separate review pass, then inspect its findings yourself. An additional agent may use more paid model capacity.

Review revised-draft-v2.txt against brief-sample.txt. List any unsupported claim and suggest a correction. Do not edit either file.
    Claude Code subagent guide

OMP users can keep both versions as plain text and request a separate review in a new pass. OMP's official subagent guide explains an optional specialist route. These are not the same installer or command set.

Ready-made Claude Code kits for Mac

Each page has its own recorded before and after. The optional ZIP belongs to Claude Code on Mac; every page also offers the plain-text exercise for either tool.
