Claude Code / researcher first win
Separate supported facts from claims.
See exactly what a short source supports, and what it does not.
Cost: The kits and practice files are free. Claude Pro includes Claude Code: $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month with annual billing ($200 up front) (as of 2026-10-08). API billing is pay-per-use. OMP cost depends on the model provider you connect.
Your first win, on fictional files
Download both fictional files first. They are free and work without a ZIP on Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Our best-in-class membership delivers guaranteed savings and effortless grocery delivery.
The brief says: The current welcome is a receipt and a fridge magnet.
Read brief-sample.txt and draft-sample.txt in this folder. Create research-brief.txt with Supported and Not supported headings. Under Supported, cite brief-sample.txt for each fact about the welcome experience. Under Not supported, list draft claims the brief cannot justify. Do not edit the inputs or invent evidence.

Human check: Open brief-sample.txt and confirm each cited line. The only citation here is the fictional brief, not independent evidence.
Your first time in a terminal
Use a computer for this part. Choose Claude Code for the optional Mac kits or OMP for the plain-text practice path. Install only your chosen tool. Nothing is uploaded to this site.
Both practice-file downloads are directly above the example.
Make a folder called cli-practice inside Downloads, then put both fictional files in it. Leave the originals unchanged. Then choose your computer below.
Mac: Terminal and Finder
- Install Claude Code (official setup) or OMP (official quickstart). Read the install instructions before running a command.
- Open Terminal using Command + Space, type Terminal, and press Return. Type
cdwith a space aftercd. Drag yourcli-practicefolder from Finder into Terminal, then press Return. Apple's folder-drag guide. - Type
claudeorompand press Return. On its first run, Claude Code asks you to sign in in your browser; OMP asks you to set up a model provider. - Copy the EXACT REQUEST above, paste it into your agent, and press Return. Read any requested file permissions before approving them.
- In Finder, open
cli-practiceand double-clickresearch-brief.txtto read it. Compare it withbrief-sample.txt; do not trust the result without checking.
Windows: File Explorer and PowerShell
- Install Claude Code (official Windows setup) or OMP (official quickstart) using the PowerShell command, not a Mac
.commandfile. - In File Explorer, right-click
cli-practiceand choose Open in Terminal on Windows 11. It opens in that folder. If this option is missing, open PowerShell, typecd, paste the folder's full path in quotes, and press Enter. Microsoft's Terminal context-menu support. - Type
claudeorompand press Enter. On its first run, Claude Code asks you to sign in in your browser; OMP asks you to set up a model provider. - Copy the EXACT REQUEST above, paste it into your agent, and press Enter. Review file-access prompts before approval.
- Open
cli-practicein File Explorer and double-clickresearch-brief.txt. Read it and check every claim againstbrief-sample.txt.
Linux: Terminal and Files
- Install Claude Code (official Linux setup) or OMP (official quickstart). Use the terminal install command for your chosen tool.
- Open Terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T on most distributions). Type
cd ~/Downloads/cli-practiceand press Enter. If you saved the folder elsewhere, replace the path with its location. In KDE Dolphin, opening the folder and pressing Shift + F4 also opens a terminal there. KDE's folder-terminal guide. - Type
claudeorompand press Enter. On its first run, Claude Code asks you to sign in in your browser; OMP asks you to set up a model provider. - Paste the EXACT REQUEST above and press Enter. Review access prompts before approving.
- Open
cli-practicein Files and openresearch-brief.txtin a text editor. Compare it withbrief-sample.txt.
If a command is not found, use the linked official install troubleshooting. For a slower walkthrough, see the Claude Code terminal guide and OMP quickstart. The same two plain-text files work in either lane; the four Mac ZIP kits are Claude Code only.
One next move
Open the saved file and identify a sentence to improve. Ask for a second version saved as a new file, without changing either original. Provide two sources you may share and ask the agent to mark any claim neither supports.
Follow the shared four-step ladder: first file, second version, skill, separate review.
Want the ready-made Claude Code kit?
The ZIP has a Mac installer, six Claude Code commands, two skills, a guide, and editable memory. The plain-text task above works without a ZIP on Mac, Windows, or Linux. This kit has not been adapted to OMP.
More to try
Make a finding land
Read draft-sample.txt as if it were a finding for a non-expert reader. Rewrite it so a smart person with no background gets it in one read, without dumbing it down. Keep the caveats.
Scope before you dig
I need to research [topic]. Before searching, ask me three questions to scope it, then lay out the five sources or angles you would check and why.
Stress-test the conclusion
Here is my conclusion and the evidence for it. Argue the strongest case that I am wrong, then tell me what single piece of evidence would settle it.
Your challenge
When you choose your own material, use only files you are allowed to share. Check every saved output yourself.
- Turn a stack of sources into a one-page brief with citations
- Rewrite a finding so a non-expert gets it in one read
- Pressure-test a conclusion before you put your name on it
- Get a sourced answer to a question instead of vibes
- Build a skill for the brief format you use every time
