The prompt

Render in the visual register of an eight-page mini-zine created from a single letter-sized sheet folded and cut into a stapled quarter-fold booklet. Medium: black-and-white photocopy of a hand-laid spread, showing the slight registration drift and trim variance of a hand-cut object. The image is one panel of the unfolded spread, with visible faint dotted-line fold marks at the edges, slight discoloration at the staple position, the soft crease history of having been folded and unfolded multiple times. Palette: white paper, black toner, occasional grey from a midtone half-survived through copying. Texture: copy paper grain, a slight cup at the staple, finger oils at the corners from passing pocket to pocket at a show or infoshop table. Lighting: flat indoor light. Mood: the dignity of the format that fits in a back pocket and travels with the body, the format of community-built distribution networks where each reader is also a distributor. Do not render any legible text, headlines, slogans, logos, watermarks, named hate symbols, or defamatory likeness of real persons; all text-feel is abstract toner texture only. Preserve the subject, pose, and composition of the source image exactly, change only the medium and rendering.

What it is doing

Format is destiny in clandestine media. Letter-sized newsletters get archived; quarter-folded mini-zines travel. The dimension that fits a back pocket without bending is the dimension that enters social circulation. Online media has no equivalent format constraint, which is why it has no equivalent circulation discipline. The mini-zine is a Schelling format: everyone who makes one knows everyone who reads one will fold it into a pocket and pass it forward.
