What it is doing

Hipgnosis refused photo-collage on principle. If you wanted a man on fire shaking hands with another man you BUILT the rig, hired the stuntman, set him on fire, and photographed it. The thesis is that the impossible image must be earned by physical production, and once earned it carries an evidentiary weight no collage can ever fake. The album cover as witness statement. The Hipgnosis register is the photographic version of "say it with the camera, not with the keyboard."
