The Archive

The Ledger by the Lamp

The Archive smells of paper and old pipe smoke. Card catalogs line every wall, and when you pull a drawer at random, every card describes an object you saw downstairs. Each one is stamped Acquired with a date from next week.

On the desk beneath the lamp lies the visitor ledger meant for opening day. Its pages are blank except for the first line, where a fountain pen waits, uncapped and still wet.

Beside the desk, the grate of an old freight lift stands open. A handwritten tag hangs from the lever: Workshop. Staff only. That means you now.
