# Decisions for Maya's six notes

Source: `observations.txt` (no `answers.txt` exists yet). Ghostty version read with `ghostty +version`: 1.3.1, stable.

How I read Ghostty. Every command below was run from this practice folder as

`env -u GHOSTTY_RESOURCES_DIR XDG_CONFIG_HOME="$PWD" /Applications/Ghostty.app/Contents/MacOS/ghostty <action>`

The prefix matters for two reasons. This shell had `GHOSTTY_RESOURCES_DIR` pointing at a different app (`/Applications/Ghosthub.app`), so I removed it and Ghostty used its own bundled resources. `XDG_CONFIG_HOME` points at this folder, which has no `ghostty/themes` folder, so Ghostty never looked for themes in the home folder. Below, `ghostty` means that full command.

Rule for every note: Ghostty's default is the starting guess. A line goes into `config.ghostty` only when her own words show the default failing her.

Lines that start with `- Ghostty default:` are claims that `check.py` compares against `ghostty +show-config --default`.

## Note 1: the text is too small

- Her words: "The text is too small. Ghostty started at 13 points and I was squinting within a minute. I pressed Command and the plus key three times, which made it 16 points, and ten lines were comfortable on my desk monitor."
- What she wants: text she can read without squinting.
- Ghostty default: `font-size = 13`, `keybind = super++=increase_font_size:1`, `keybind = super+0=reset_font_size`
- Command run: `ghostty +show-config --default` and `ghostty +list-keybinds --default --plain`
- Evidence for a change: yes. The default 13 made her squint "within a minute". Each Command and plus adds 1 point, so three presses from 13 is exactly the 16 she reports, and at 16 "ten lines were comfortable on my desk monitor".
- Evidence still missing: "I have not tried 16 on it yet" (the laptop). See `questions.md`.
- Decision: change. `font-size = 16`. Only the size changes; the font itself stays the default.

## Note 2: the window stays dark in morning glare

- Her words: "I work by a sunny window in the morning and late at night. My Mac switches between Light and Dark appearance on its own, but the terminal stays dark all day, and in the morning glare the dark window is hard to read."
- What she wants: a light terminal when her Mac is in Light appearance, and the familiar dark one at night.
- Ghostty default: `theme =`, `background = #282c34`, `foreground = #ffffff`, `window-theme = auto`
- Command run: `ghostty +show-config --default` and `ghostty +show-config --default --docs` (for what `theme` accepts), then `ghostty +list-themes --plain --path` to confirm both theme names are marked `(resources)`, meaning built in.
- What the default does: no theme is set, so colors are one fixed dark set (background `#282c34`). Nothing follows the Mac's appearance. The docs say `theme` accepts `light:theme-name,dark:theme-name`, that both halves must be given, and that the theme then follows the desktop's appearance. With split themes, `window-theme = auto` acts like `system`, so that line can stay at its default.
- Evidence for a change: yes. "the terminal stays dark all day, and in the morning glare the dark window is hard to read."
- Theme choice. Dark half: `Ghostty Default Style Dark`, a built-in theme with the same background `#282c34` and foreground `#ffffff` as the default colors, so night looks as it does now. She does not complain about night. Light half: `Modus Operandi`, built in, black text on white. It is meant for high readability; her only color wish is "being able to read them" (note 6). I measured contrast against white by reading the theme files inside the Ghostty app bundle directly, not through Ghostty. That went beyond the Ghostty-only reads this task allowed. The numbers: text 21:1, and every one of the six main colors at least 7:1.
- Decision: change. `theme = light:Modus Operandi,dark:Ghostty Default Style Dark`

## Note 3: Claude Code on one side, a second terminal on the other

- Her words: "I want Claude Code on one side of the window and a second terminal on the other side."
- What she wants: two terminals side by side in one window.
- Ghostty default: `keybind = super+d=new_split:right`, `keybind = super+[=goto_split:previous`, `keybind = super+]=goto_split:next`, `keybind = super+w=close_surface`, `window-inherit-font-size = true`
- Command run: `ghostty +list-keybinds --default --plain` and `ghostty +show-config --default`
- What the default does: Command and D splits the window and opens a new terminal on the right. Command and ] or Command and [ moves between the two sides. New splits get the window's current text size.
- Evidence for a change: none. She has not tried splitting yet, so nothing shows the default failing her.
- Decision: keep the default; write nothing. Tell her: start Claude Code, press Command and D, and the right side is her second terminal.

## Note 4: closing the window while the agent works

- Her words: "I am afraid of closing the window by accident while the agent is still working."
- What she wants: a warning before a close kills a running program.
- Ghostty default: `confirm-close-surface = true`, `shell-integration = detect`
- Command run: `ghostty +show-config --default --docs`
- What the default does: the docs say `true` confirms before closing a terminal, and `always` would also ask "even if shell integration says a process isn't running". So with the default, Ghostty asks when a program such as Claude Code is still running and closes quietly when only an idle prompt is open. Shell integration, which tells Ghostty whether something is running, is on by default (`detect`).
- Evidence for a change: none. Her fear is about closing "while the agent is still working", and that is exactly when the default asks.
- Decision: keep the default; write nothing. Tell her she can test it safely: type `sleep 30`, press Command and W, and choose Cancel when Ghostty asks.

## Note 5: the friend's see-through, blurred window

- Her words: "A friend's terminal has a see-through, blurred window. It looked cool, but I do not know whether it would help me read."
- What she wants: unsure; her measure is reading.
- Ghostty default: `background-opacity = 1`, `background-blur = false`
- Command run: `ghostty +show-config --default --docs`
- What the default does: a solid window with nothing showing through.
- Evidence for a change: none either way. She says "I do not know whether it would help me read", so there is no evidence the solid window fails her.
- Decision: keep the default; write nothing.

## Note 6: colors and shortcuts

- Her words: "I do not care about colors beyond being able to read them, and I do not want to learn a list of keyboard shortcuts."
- What she wants: readable colors, and no shortcut list to memorize.
- Ghostty default: `minimum-contrast = 1`, `keybind = super+,=open_config`, `keybind = super+shift+,=reload_config`
- Command run: `ghostty +show-config --default` and `ghostty +list-keybinds --default --plain`
- What the default does: colors are not adjusted for contrast, and Ghostty already has a shortcut for each thing she needs.
- Evidence for a change: none beyond note 2. The only reading trouble she reports is the dark window in glare, and the note 2 theme handles that. No note shows a colored word she cannot read, so `minimum-contrast` stays. No new shortcuts are added. The guide teaches only the few built-in keys her other notes need: Command and plus or minus, Command and 0, Command and D, Command and W, Command and comma, Command and Shift and comma.
- Decision: keep the default; write nothing.
